A hospital located in Metropolitan New York City was experiencing corrosion
problems which were caused by a chemical leak into a failing containment area.
These issues caused concerns relative to structural stability of the floor
where the containment area was located as well as concerns about patient safety
because the containment area was located directly above a patient ward. Water
was leaking through onto patients, nurses and hospital equipment and failing
concrete posed a direct safety threat to these areas.
Our investigation revealed that over the years, lithium bromide had dripped
onto the containment concrete floor causing corrosion of the reinforcing steel
within the floor. We concluded that the integrity of the concrete and rebar
reinforcement systems integrity had been compromised.
CorrTech provided project management, structural concrete rehabilitation and
high performance coating application in the lithium bromide containment area
as well as the entire surface of the mechanical room floor. Total application
area was approximately 11,000 square feet.
