St. Joseph Hospital

A hospital located in southern New Hampshire had problems with the concrete infrastructure of their double T system in their public parking garage. The concrete hanging down from the ceiling was deteriorating to the point where chunks of concrete were cracking off and in some cases falling completely to the floor. The facilities manager contacted CorrTech to remedy the situation.

An immediate inspection was performed by CorrTech on their three level parking garage structure. As a result several conditions were identified as contributing to the concrete deterioration within the garage. The most common and prevalent of these was the road salt bearing water which infiltrates through the concrete to the pre stressed wire strands embedded within the double-T beams, resulting in spalling concrete and vehicle damage.

CorrTech provided a phased design-build scope of services to address both short term corrosion issues, and long term corrosion mitigation and maintenance.

Short Term Repairs:

Clean and apply corrosion inhibitors on the exposed reinforcing steel components within the double Ts and deck areas requiring repair in the 2006-2007 winter season

Repair the structures with corrosion inhibitor containing mortar

Following proper cure of the concrete repair system, the entire bottom the double-T was treated with a migrating corrosion inhibitor and sealed to prevent water migration into the concrete

Long Term Corrosion Mitigation and Maintenance

A proactive approach was developed consisting of the topical application of migrating corrosion inhibitors on the various structural elements throughout the garage on a periodic basis.

This work began in the end of 2006 with completion of the first year maintenance program in 2007.
