Large Diameter Water Mains

CorrTech provides in progress services for the corrosion control of various existing and new large diameter water mains in New York City. Specific services include: stray current monitoring and testing, cathodic protection design surveys, preparation of cathodic protection design packages and materials submittals, construction installation supervision, acceptance testing, final testing and the preparation of operation an maintenance manuals and reports. The training of Owner’s personnel on the performance of specific testing and monitoring procedures relative to cathodic protection performance and stray current monitoring and analysis is also a service provided by CorrTech.

CorrTech has also provided multi-day educational seminars to various engineering, construction and administrative personnel employed by the Owner. These seminars have focused on corrosion mechanisms and control methods as well as materials selection relative to corrosion control of critical New York City water system infrastructure.

One interesting project consisted of retrofitting galvanic anode cathodic protection for a 50 year old 60-inch diameter steel water main. This main had developed a significant leak history due primarily to stray current corrosion caused by DC powered traction systems. It was estimated at the time that replacement cost of this approximately 1 mile run of pipe would be in the $10-$15 million range. CorrTech designed and facilitated the installation of cathodic protection components for a small fraction of the replacement cost. This line is still in service and leaks have been greatly reduced.
